G-SHOCK has confirmed that it will be updating more of its perennially popular watch models with LED backlight displays.
Including the DW-5750UE-1JF that was unveiled in late December, up to 14 models across series GM-5600, GM-S5600, DW- 5600 and DW-6900 will incorporate this hardware change. Among the listed models, a handful of the DW-5600 and DW-6900 watches are scheduled to be released in Japan later this month, where they will gradually replace and phase out existing models both domestically and internationally.
G-Shock’s first EL backlight watch is the DW-6600, which was first released in 1994. Since then, a plethora of models and series from the brand have also incorporated the feature. The new LED backlight is said to be significantly more power-efficient with the battery boasting a longer average lifespan. Despite the change, the physical brightness the upgrade offers will not be noticeably different, while also improving the common degradation issue of its predecessor.
